How are Sonos's three portable speakers, the Roam SL, the Roam and the Move, similar and different? We compare.

Sonos now has three different portable speakers. There's the Move ($399), which was released in late 2019. There's the Roam ($179), which was released last spring (in April 2021). And, most recently, there's the Roam SL ($159). If you're looking at each speaker and wondering what the similarities and differences actually are, here's what you need to know.

All three speakers have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and can work on their own, or in a bigger Sonos system. They all support AirPlay 2 and are compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant when connected to Wi-Fi. And both the Move and the Roam (not the Roam SL) have Automatic Trueplay, meaning they will automatically tune themselves so that they sound best.

Ultimately, the Move is pricier but can't be beat on sound and the Roam is more affordable and portable beyond compare. The Roam SL is the cheapest option, but it's probably worth spending the extra $20 for the improved sound and voice assistant. Here's the nitty gritty:

The Roam SL is a mic-less version of the Roam. It's $20 cheaper, but it can't listen to your voice commands and doesn't support Trueplay.

The Roam is Sonos's newest and smallest portable speaker designed to go anywhere you want to go.

The Move is Sonos's larger portable speaker that's designed to sound great in any room of your house, but not to leave it.

Sonos's newest ultra-portable speaker is $20 cheaper than the Roam, but sacrifices Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands.

Sonos speakers have been known for their ease of use. Now that it’s introduced Move, does its versatility complicate that “Sonos experience”?
