Of course, there are still Bluetooth earbuds that have a cable between the buds, but the most popular and best earbuds are completely wireless, so this list is about the best wireless earbuds. Some wireless earphones come with earbuds, while others have an open design with no buds.

Active noise cancellation is largely only offered by “noise isolating” earbuds with silicone or foam ear tips, as Bose and Google put it – a feature that used to be a rarity but is now standard. These days, it’s hard to buy a pair of wireless earbuds. The market has come a long way since the early days of wireless earphones, when we had to put up with mediocre sound quality and unreliable performance to get rid of wires. Today, many things are different. After several generations of products from which we have learned our lessons, companies like Sony, Apple, Samsung and others are launching their most impressive earphones yet.

But those aren’t always the most important criteria for everyone: maybe you’re looking for the perfect fitness earbuds, or a set that’s just as good for Zoom calls as it is for listening to your favorite playlists and podcasts. Increasingly, technology companies are making sure their earbuds work best with their own products through exclusive features and functions. So that’s another point to consider when buying.

The Apple AirPods Pro have a few features that make them more useful than traditional wireless earbuds. There’s even a fit test for the earbuds that lets you make sure they fit properly in your ear. This will test whether you should use a different pair of earbuds or if the active noise cancellation is working properly. To do this, you’ll need to go into Bluetooth settings and then tap the little “i” icon next to the AirPods.

If you’re using iOS, you’ll get a few more options, such as? such as the ability to rename the AirPods, turn active noise cancellation on or off, and customize the tap-and-hold feature on each earbud. They handle complex tracks well, but lack some of the detail and nuance that really good in-ear and over-ear headphones can produce. They fail to produce deep, booming bass, making some tracks sound a bit thin. Their biggest problem is background noise.

They can’t block anything out, so you can’t try to listen to tracks on the London Underground or tune out your colleagues in an office. It does mean you’re more aware of your surroundings, though. New to AirPods is support for virtual surround sound with Apple devices, called “Spatial Audio,” which works for movies and music with Dolby soundtracks. It tracks the movement of your head and adjusts the sound so it’s always centered on the screen in front of you.

The Life P3 have a comfortable design with a stem. They look very similar to AirPods, although they come in several colors and have silicone ear tips. And that’s the first area where Soundcore scores plus points. The Life P3s come with five sets of ear tips that are perfect for small, medium, and large ear holes. An in-app test helps you choose the right earbuds, which is very important because the Life P3’s ANC and Transparency features won’t work if your ears aren’t properly sealed.

Once you find the right earbuds, the Soundcore earbuds are very comfortable and secure. The Sennheiser True Wireless earbuds doesn’t take much getting used to. It shares the same edgy aesthetic as many of Sennheiser’s latest wireless devices, and works the same as most worthwhile wireless earbuds.

These earbuds have a new glossy finish but are otherwise visually identical to the Sennheiser earbuds, as is the charging case. Basically, if you’re familiar with the older buds, a lot of this section will sound pretty similar. Aesthetic considerations aside, these also function basically the same as the previous generation earbuds, which isn’t a bad thing. The CX Plus earbuds are lightweight and come with four different sized sets of earbuds, so you should be able to find the right fit.

It’s not often that we criticize Sony for the way their products are designed and manufactured – and we won’t start now. The WF-C500 are ultra-tidy earbuds that are compact and lightweight and can be conveniently positioned regardless of the specific size and shape of your ear. The choice of three different ear tip sizes makes putting on the earphones even easier. There’s also a mic jack on each earbud for voice assistant interaction and telephony – both Google Assistant and Siri are available.

If you prefer, control is also possible via Sony’s exemplary Headphones Connect app. In addition to the general features, here you can adjust the equalizer settings, set your Bluetooth priorities, show the app the shape of your ears, and toggle the Digital Sound Enhancement Engine on or off. DSEE is designed to “upscale” standard audio files until they “close” to the high definition standard. The ability to turn it on or off in the app lets you decide its effectiveness.

The OnePlus Buds Pro are the updated variant of the OnePlus Buds Truly Wireless. To get the most out of these in-ears, you’ll want to pair them with a OnePlus phone, and if you’re using them with an Android or iOS device, they might be a bit lacking. However, these headphones have a few new features. You now have a OnePlus companion app and a secondary app for users without a OnePlus phone, both of which offer “OnePlus Audio ID,” a hearing test that optimizes your sound profile based on your unique hearing abilities.

They also feature active noise cancellation (ANC), although it offers below-average overall performance. Unfortunately, their battery life isn’t great, although they do have a “Warp Charge” feature, which is said to give around 10 hours of uninterrupted playback time on a 10-minute charge.

If you thought Bose made us wait three years to produce anything less than the best noise-cancelling headphones, you’re sorely mistaken. The QuietComfort Earbuds are arguably the best noise-canceling headphones on the market. They offer 10 adjustable levels of noise cancellation and come close to the ANC performance of the Bose 700.

If you want absolute silence in the office or when playing YouTube videos, you should set the headphones to the highest level. This setting does a phenomenal job of blocking out ambient noise across the frequency spectrum. We tested the technology at various settings to get a feel for its noise-cancelling capabilities. The ship work going on just outside the house went unnoticed, as did the cars and dump trucks whizzing by the house. Inside, we had fun swinging to Spotify playlists without our sisters-in-law to distract us.

Anyone who already owns a pair of Galaxy Buds will feel right at home with the Galaxy Buds 2, from the hardware to the software. The Galaxy Buds 2 have a playful, rounded design that shapes both the earbuds and the USB-C case. It is a shame that Samsung did not include removable wingtips in this model, which makes the fit less secure than the cheaper Galaxy Buds Plus.

If you dare, you can also use the earbuds as workout devices, as they are IPX2 rated. Just make sure you don’t hit your head too hard or the earbuds will just come off. Samsung always packs a lot of advanced technology and sensors into it’s headphones, and we see that here as well. A reliable proximity sensor allows for automatic play/pause when you remove the headphones. Playback will not resume when you put the earbuds back in. Instead, you have to tap on one of the two touch panels.

While the Beats Fit Pro does not reinvent the wheel or, in this case, the wingtip they do implement it in a way we have never seen before. By making it a part of the earbuds and giving it extra flexibility, it can snap onto the inner ear to hold the earbuds more securely. Previously, other earbuds have opted for the wrap-around design, and while we think this style is more comfortable, there’s something very stylish about having the fin placed squarely and securely in the ear.

To help you achieve that perfect seal, the Beats Fit Pro come with two additional sets of different sized ear tips in the box, and it’s worth taking the time to find out which of these fit best. Speaking of fit, these buds do a really great job of staying in your ears. At no point in our test did the buds move even a millimeter once properly seated. However, because the fit was so precise, this put some pressure on the ears especially after prolonged wear.

As for audio performance, the Panasonic RZ-S500W true wireless earbuds are solid and accurate, with abundant bass. Considering the price, the sound is great. They produce full and powerful audio with clear highs without being exaggerated. Thanks to the bass enhancer, you can make the bass even richer if desired. Voices also come out mostly clear, especially when you switch to the Clear Voice sound enhancer mode. You can hear every lyric, but without the activated bass range sometimes takes over in some songs with high bass.

Overall, however, this is not a major problem and the audio is balanced for most audio content. Manual equalization settings are also available in the Panasonic headphones’ Audio Connect app, allowing you to customize the sound to your preferences. You can manually adjust the level of noise cancellation through the app. This is a great feature that allows you to block out more or less noise depending on where you are and what you are doing.

The Jabra Elite 3 is a pretty simple product, and that’s a good thing. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles here, which means it’s easy to pop in the earbuds and start listening. The Elite 3 are made mostly of plastic and look pretty ordinary, with a shape that hugs your ear. These wireless earbuds fit securely, though there are no hooks or fins for added stability, which means a good seal is necessary.

Fortunately, the Elite 3 come with additional silicone attachments, so it won’t be too hard to find the right fit. The earphones are IP55 rated, which guarantees protection from water jets, dust, and small objects. This makes the Elite 3 a great option for anyone who likes to participate in outdoor activities. You won’t have to worry about getting them caught in the rain or dirt of the trail.

The Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus has a fairly similar look to its predecessors, in black or white, with spherical buds and a hinged charging case, although this charging case now has a matte finish and feels a bit more stylish than the previous generation. On the front of the charging case is a row of five LEDs that indicate how much battery you have left, as well as a USB-C charging port on the left.

You’ll also find small LEDs on the outside of each earbud that show pairing status. The slim outer shells double as physical control buttons, allowing you to adjust your music playback, change the volume, answer calls and summon your device’s voice assistant. There are a few different button presses to remember, but Cambridge Audio puts a small card in the box with all the combinations, which you can easily slip in your wallet or purse.

The Live Pro 2 is packed with convincing features. Battery life is an impressive 10 hours with an additional 30 hours of standby life in the case; the six microphones ensure that your calls sound crystal clear; Bluetooth 5.2 enables multipoint connectivity to pair the earbuds with multiple devices; and active noise-cancellation ties it all together in a nice, uncluttered arc. JBL packs a significant amount of value into a rather mid-range set of earbuds, which naturally led us to question whether they live up to the price tag.

Sure enough, they certainly did. The most impressive part is this ANC; While they’re not as incredibly powerful as Sony’s ANC earbuds or the AirPods Pro, they fall just short of the two. When testing the Live Pro 2, they did a great job of reducing a noisy washing machine and excessive train noise. The beauty of the earbuds is how quickly you can toggle between ANC, ambient noise, and a “talk through” mode.

Nothing Ear 1 earbuds do not block noise like premium headphones such as the Sony WF-1000XM4. However, the inclusion of ANC is a welcome addition to sub-$100 true wireless earbuds. Active noise cancellation reduces ambient noise so you don’t have to turn up the volume to hear music clearly. This improves sound quality in noisy environments and protects the ears. A good fit with properly sized earplugs provides good passive isolation from high frequencies and background noise, such as pots and pans.

Active noise cancellation, on the other hand, targets low-frequency ambient noise, such as an airplane engine or air conditioning. Three hybrid microphones on the Nothing Ear 1 earphones measure sound both inside and outside the ear canal to cancel noise. With ANC set to maximum, the earphones attenuate frequencies from 100Hz to 1000Hz for up to 50 percent quieter sound. You won’t notice a big difference between turning ANC on and off, but it’s still better than nothing.
