About two years ago I became a “music on the golf course” convert. Although, I still relied on my weekend playing partner to provide the speaker.  We typically did what anyone with a portable Bluetooth speaker did; stuck it into the hollowed out part, or “cubbie” of the golf cart dashboard for safekeeping. Easy enough.

But putting it there made it a little more difficult to access it when necessary. We understand that not everyone wants to hear Pearl Jam blaring from a speaker while standing over their next shot (their loss). So reaching in and fumbling for the pause or volume button isn’t always the easiest thing to do.

The other problem with sticking your speaker into what essentially is a plastic cave is it muffles the audio. Sure, it’s clear enough sitting directly in front of it, but sometimes even when you’re sitting on the opposite side of the cart you can’t really hear it. And you certainly won’t get good audio quality outside of the cart.

Enter my favorite new golf accessory: The AmpCaddy.

It seems the cool kids who designed this thing had the same annoying issues I did with the run-of-the-mill Bluetooth speaker. Sound quality and accessibility.

They’ve designed the speaker with a simple, adjustable claw on the backside of it so you can mount it to the golf cart itself. And if that wasn’t brilliant enough, they’ve built it so the speaker can actually pivot from left to right and right to left. In other words, you can point the speaker towards the inside of the cart or outside of the cart.

When I hop out of the cart, I simply point it towards the tee box. And as I hop back in, I can point it back towards me as I make the drive towards the middle of the fairway, 270 yards from where I began.

(Okay, maybe more like 250 yards…and also probably not in the middle of the fairway. Whatever.)

Another convenient piece about the ability to pivot the speaker is again for those that haven’t come around to music on the course just yet. When approaching them, I can always simply point the speaker away from them as I roll on by.

But that’s just one of many conveniences the AmpCaddy offers. It’s really all about accessibility. Attaching it to the rollbar (for lack of a better term) of the golf cart just makes life better. It sounds better, I can pause easier, I can adjust the volume easier, and now I have all kinds of room in the cart where our speaker used to be. Oh, and it comes in a nice, draw-string pouch that can either attach to your golf bag or easily fit into a bag pocket. So it travels well, too.

Now, let’s talk sound quality. In short, it sounds great. There are two speakers with bass-boost in the cabinet, providing you with some really nice low-end. It also has the ability to change the equalization to match different types of music. Overall, the sound is well-balanced and crystal-clear. I did my best to really push its output while I was alone on the course and it never became distorted.

Finally, the speaker has a lithium-ion battery built into it that you can recharge using a supplied mini-USB cable. After three rounds of golf, I finally had to plug it in. So the battery is a good one and meant to last longer than your longest round.

Bottom line, I’ve tested and reviewed a lot of cool (and not so cool) golf stuff before, but this may be my favorite of them all. It’s well-designed, especially for golf, it’s well-made and durable, and it works and sounds great.
