Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating after racist graffiti was discovered on Friday in a tunnel behind the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse.

According to a report from the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on patrol was flagged down by an individual on a morning run. The man told the deputy about the graffiti, which he guessed was fresh. The man said he runs through the tunnel every morning and suspected the incident occurred earlier that day because the paint was wet and a strong odor was still in the air.

The deputy arrived at the tunnel and discovered approximately 20 freshly sprayed images, some of which depicted racist and derogatory symbols such as a swastika.

Deputies have no suspects, however, the case remains under investigation.

A spray-painted swastika was found in a Silver Creek Village bathroom playground in July. Homophobic and racist slurs were also tagged outside of a Silver Summit apartment in June and July.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 9, including vehicle burglaries, suspected DUI and missing hikers.

Summit County Search and Rescue responded to a father and son that had become lost near Henry’s Fork. The party was located in good condition shortly after.

A theft was reported at a Kimball Junction business. The complainant said his wallet, which contained $300 in cash and a credit card, was stolen. He said the last known location of the wallet was a gas station in Wanship. Several fraudulent charges totaling $1,200 were made on his credit card throughout Summit County.

Search and Rescue was contacted about a pair of overdue hikers. They were later located in good condition.

A 21-year-old Park City man was arrested following a traffic stop on Old Highway 40. Deputies suspected the man was driving under the influence of alcohol and discovered multiple open containers in plain sight. The man was found to not have a valid driver’s license. He was transported to the Summit County Jail.

Search and Rescue responded to a report of a hiker who was missing from Slader Basin since 6 p.m. on Friday. The hiker found his way to a campground at Ledge Fork before Search and Rescue’s arrival.

Search and Rescue was notified of an injured woman who had been bucked off a horse near S.R. 150. Medical responders made it to the woman before Search and Rescue arrived.

Deputies responded to a domestic dispute in Newpark. A 42-year-old West Jordan man was discovered to have an active warrant and was found in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested without incident.

A Kimball Junction grocery store employee reported an unknown woman approached her in the parking lot while she was working and asking to use her phone. The employee later discovered the woman used the phone to send herself $1,200. The case remains open.

A 36-year-old Park City man was arrested at Swaner Preserve. Deputies approached the man, who was parked in the pullout. He was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and was found in possession of a THC vape pen. The man was transported to the Summit County Jail.

Deputies assisted Utah Highway Patrol with a semi-truck on fire. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80.

A woman reported her vehicle had been struck by another car, which did not stop, while it was parked and unoccupied at a Kimball Junction business. An accident report was taken and she was provided a case number. There is no suspect information.

Deputies responded to a call about a burglary in Oakley that occurred three hours earlier. A woman said she was taking a shower when she heard her dogs start to bark. The woman heard heavy footsteps in her home, looked under the bathroom door and saw a human shadow walking across her living room. She then heard a sliding glass door open and close. The woman noticed a checkbook and a pair of sunglasses were missing when she came out of the bathroom. There is no suspect description. Deputies planned to follow up with neighbors and possible surveillance footage.

A Kamas woman reported her Bluetooth or WiFi had been hacked. She said she switched phone carriers and her new account was hacked. The account was turned into a business account and she could no longer access it. The woman spoke with the phone carrier and discovered multiple business accounts had been opened with her social security number. Investigators planned to follow up.

Deputies responded to a criminal mischief report at a Silver Creek business. An employee was outside on her break and noticed her vehicle had been keyed. The woman said she was unsure who may have done it. There are no leads.

An employee of a Silver Summit business accidentally clicked on a phishing email requesting $16,000 and wired the money to the account. The employee was later contacted by the actual vendor advising them they had not received the payment. The manager is suspected to have been scammed by an unknown party. The case remains open for investigation.

A 37-year-old Salt Lake City man was arrested on I-80 following a traffic stop. He was found to be an interlock-restricted driver, with no device installed, and is the subject of multiple warrants. He was transported to the Summit County Jail without incident.

Deputies responded to a call about a vehicle burglary. A Hoytsville woman said her husband noticed his Bluetooth speaker and Ruger handgun were no longer in his truck on Sept. 29. The man waited to report the incident to see if he could locate the items, but he did not find them after a couple of weeks of looking. The couple determined the truck was left unsecured and several items were stolen from it. There is no suspect information at this time.

The Snyderville Basin Planning Commission is slated to conduct a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to discuss whether a residential treatment and social detox center, known as the Wasatch Crest Treatment Facility, should receive a conditional-use permit.
