Sony Inzone H9 review

The Inzone H9 is a good gaming headset. It has good ANC, pretty decent sound and a good microphone. Battery life is good and it is comfortable enough to wear for very long sessions.

The Sony Inzone H9 review Wireless are gaming headsets from the in Zone range. This series is intended for pairing with the PlayStation 5 console, as they share similar aesthetics and, lacking an AUX port, cannot be used with the Xbox. They are the most premium model in this series and come with features such as active noise cancellation (ANC), spatial audio and Bluetooth. However, their build quality is not up to par with other high-end gaming headsets, such as the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, and otherwise they do not have much to distinguish them from the competition.

The Sony Inzone H9s are not designed for sports and fitness, as they have a bulky design that can fall off the head with moderate movements. In addition, they have a game-centric design, with a non-removable boom microphone, which stands out in the gym. That said, they are quite comfortable, well made, and support Bluetooth, eliminating the risk of the audio cable getting caught in something and pulling them off your head. Sony’s H9s are decent for wireless gaming.

They are designed for PC and PS5, so you cannot use them on Xbox. If this is not a problem for you, they have very low latency thanks to the wireless dongle, which ensures synchronization of audio and images, and the battery lasts over 22 hours continuously. If you like to play with others, the microphone ensures that your voice is heard clearly, even in moderately noisy environments. The sound profile is thunderous, which can help accentuate sound effects such as footsteps, but you can customize the sound to your liking using the graphic equalizer and presets in the attached app.

Sony’s Inzone H9s look more like a pair of PS5 headphones than Sony’s Pulse 3D headphones. Like the console, the Inzone H9s are large, oversized oval headphones covered in white plastic. Most of the outer casing and microphone stand are white, while the soft leather trim and extendable arms are all black. Headphone volume is adjusted with a small thumbwheel on the left earpiece. The microphone is also located on the left earpiece.

On the right are buttons to turn the game or chat sound down or up, Bluetooth pairing, and power on. Because of its huge round earcups, wearing the Sony Inzone H9 will make you look a little silly. This became clear when we wore the headphones during a business meeting. Although they were comfortable, we looked rather ridiculous. This will not be a problem if you are not dealing with other people or if you simply do not care what others think of you.

But if you feel a little self-conscious, you might want to use these headphones when you are alone. One design option we appreciated is the swivel headphones. These make it easier to store the headphones in a backpack and also allow the Sony Inzone H9s to be worn comfortably around the neck when not in use. Headphones such as the Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT and Razer Barracuda X also have this feature.

Although we are not a fan of the look when wearing the Sony Inzone H9s, we like their excellent comfort level. These headphones are so comfortable that it is easy to forget you are wearing them. This fact in itself is an excellent selling point. You can customize the fit of the headphones thanks to the expandable arms and swivel earpieces. If we were able to fit the Inzone H9s to my big head, we are sure you will be able to fit them to your skull as well, regardless of size. Suffice it to say, we love the comfortable feel of the Inzone H9s.

The Sony Inzone H9 connects via a 2.4 GHz USB wireless dongle to provide a constant connection with less lag. It also features Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, which enables pairing with Android and Apple phones and supports SBC and AAC codecs. The ability to simultaneously connect to two devices and receive audio from a phone, PC, or game console is the best feature.

This adaptability can be very useful in specific Discord configurations and other special circumstances. The dongle requires you to choose whether to connect it to a PS5 or a PC, but in this way you can change system-level settings, such as the balance between game and chat.

Sony’s Inzone H9 headphones feature active noise cancellation, a welcome feature that was missing from the Pulse 3D headphones. Of the three new Inzone H-series headphones, only the H9 has ANC. The Sony Inzone H9s do a good job of blocking out sound. During testing, we found that the noise cancellation function is much better than the Razer Opus and closer to that of the AirPods Pro. Before playing any kind of audio, the noise cancellation did not completely block external noises.

However, when we started playing music or a podcast through the H9, it did a good job of blocking out external sounds. The Sony Inzone H9 also has an Ambient Sound function that amplifies external sounds, so you can hear things like people talking without having to remove the headphones. There is a setting in the Inzone Hub software that allows you to set the desired level of ambient sound, as well as a “Focus on Voice” toggle that reduces ambient noise and prioritizes conversations between people.

On the sound front with the H9, the mix is heavier on the mid and high frequencies, and at times the low end can seem a bit muffled, as evidenced by listening to Roll The Bones by Rush. That said, the low frequencies are definitely there, and the H9 is able to deliver lower frequencies than most other headphones, down to 5KHz.

While this is not something you necessarily hear, it is good to have it so that the H9 can bring out the low end a bit more. Nevertheless, they ensure a pleasant listening experience. The Sony Inzone H9s also offer a good sense of placement and a fairly decent soundstage, although in some tracks there was some overlap between instruments and voices.

The ANC is a nice touch and does a decent job of blocking noise, although it is not up to the standards of similarly priced headphones with the dedicated function, such as my Bose Noise Cancelling 700s, which did a much better job of dampening fan noise, for example. The room mode, which can be activated via a small button on the left handset, has a relatively clear and natural sound, though a bit compressed at times.

Sony promises that the Sony Inzone H9 can provide up to 32 hours of battery life. In our tests, we were able to get about 30 hours of use before choosing to plug in for a recharge. The Inzone H9 does not provide a clear indication of battery life on the headphones themselves.

There is no indicator on the display or even a flashing LED to signal that the battery is running low. It is necessary to connect to a PC or PS5 to check battery life, and even then no exact percentage or estimate of time remaining is provided, only an icon with three bars on the PS5 (or four bars on the PC) to indicate the amount of power left.

The Sony Inzone H9 is a respectable first attempt to create a gaming headset that is not associated with the PlayStation name, although the styling still closely resembles that of the PS5. Although the noise cancellation of this headset is not up to the standards of Sony’s top-of-the-line ANC headphones, it still works perfectly in 3D.

These headphones are also worth considering for their excellent battery life and compatibility with multiple devices. The H9 is difficult to recommend, given its high price, because of its average music playback capabilities, poor microphone, hypersensitive to even the slightest ambient noise as well as speech, and variable audio levels between devices.
