Despite leaving the scene, the Buick Regal TourX makes a compelling choice as an everyday driver.

When the Buick Regal TourX arrived on the scene for the first time in 2017, it ticked all the boxes for a perfect wagon, providing practicality, usefulness, and efficiency. Soon, the wagon became General Motors’ runner-up product that reignited the station wagon trend by delivering an excellent wagon that did everything without breaking the bank.

Thanks to its powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Buick Regal TourX had excellent acceleration and throttle feedback, allowing it to square up boldly against the Subaru Outback and the Audi A4 Allroad. Around town, the Buick Regal TourX was smooth and comfortable, and despite its hefty weight, it had engaging driving dynamics.

Sadly for GM though, despite having the ideal balance of spaciousness, performance, and power, it was never very well-liked in the SUV-obsessed United States market. And with the low sales, GM struggled to keep importing Regals from the German manufacturing site. Although GM officially discontinued the Buick Regal line for the States in 2020, which included the standard Regal sedan, Opel is still manufacturing models for the Chinese market.

Despite leaving the scene, the Buick Regal TourX makes a compelling choice as an everyday driver. Here are some reasons why we think you should buy a Buick Regal TourX.

Co-developed with Opel, GM’s former unit, the Buick Regal TourX came on the same E2 platform as the turbocharged V6-propelled Buick Sportback (also sold in China). With that, it’s easy to understand that the Buick Regal TourX received a lot of the SUV's design cues. At a glance, the Buick Regal TourX doesn’t like a traditional wagon, thanks to its sleeker, sportier, and more aggressive looks.

At the front, the TourX has a cool-looking broad grille with vertical bars, which floats the Buick logo in the center, winged by a thicker horizontal bar. Styled on each side of the grille are the Automatic halogen headlights, which originally came standard, along with daytime running lamps and both front and rear fog lights.

All models level received 18-inch alloy wheels, stylish bumpers, side sills, and wheel arches that all came underlined with black plastic. What’s more, the single chrome strip trailing from the door panel to the rear lights adds a special touch. The rest of the car gets a simple, elegant design with smooth styling elements that stand out.

The Buick Regal TourX has a sporty and premium-looking cabin that utilizes a lot of high-quality materials, light colors, and a large glass area that gives its occupants a feeling of space, and that is probably why it’s still one of China’s best-selling premium cars. It comes standard with features like the cloth upholstery manual tilt-and-telescoping steering column, automatic dual-zone climate control, and a six-way manual driver's seat.

The lower trim levels have a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment interface, which supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth, as well as a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot as standard, along with a 7-speaker sound system. The high-end trims have a bigger 8-inch screen that pairs with the SiriusXM and a 4.2-inch multicolor cluster display.

Other features like the Cruise control and keyless entry and ignition add a layer of convenience, while the teen driver system, rearview camera, and blind-spot monitoring make up the safety suite. Another thing we admire so much is the amount of insulation in the cabin, which muffles out the noise made by either the engine or road or weather, resulting in a comfier ride.

One of the best things about owning a wagon is all that additional cabin space that a traditional sedan doesn’t offer, and the Buick Regal TourX is among the best in the class. Measuring around 196 inches in length, the Regal TourX is not only longer than the Subaru Outback, the A4 Allroad, and the standard Regal Sportback, but it also surpasses some of the longest vehicles in the segment, like the E-Class wagon and Volvo V60.

Fortunately, because of its length, it comes with a 111.4-inch wheelbase, which paves the way for a considerably spacious cabin for its 5 occupants and about 73.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat.

Under their sleek hoods, all Buick Regal TourX models pack a 2.0-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine that made 250 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. If those figures sound familiar, it’s because they are. This engine setup, along with the 8-speed auto, came from the Chevy Malibu, and extra components came from other GM cars.

Although the TourX never started off to be the fastest wagon, its powerful engine made a strong statement, and thanks to its capable sedan platform, perfectly-balanced chassis, and responsive steering, it offers great driving dynamics. While it doesn’t take on a performance approach, the 3,708-pound wagon could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in not more than 6.4 seconds, thanks to the powerplant and the lively AWD system.

The TourX still performs to its expected level of utility with a 5.8-inch ground clearance without sacrificing stability or driving performance. The TourX offers more body control and a high level of refinement than any other vehicle in its class, even at high speeds and when fully loaded.
